                                    'Squire

In the 12th century when a boy, from a family of some prominence, reached the age of seven it could be decided that he be sent to live in the castle of some famous nobleman to begin his training in becoming a knight.  First, as a Page, his education began by performing humble services for the lords and ladies of the manor, such as serving food and drink at the Lord's table and running errands throughout the castle grounds.  He learned proper etiquette and manners, to respect and honor women, reading, writing, numbers, singing, dancing, strumming the lute, how to hunt, use a sword and ride a horse.

Around the age of 14, the boy was apprenticed to a Knight and graduated to the rank of Squire.  He was taught skill with the sword, lance and shield, sometimes engaging in mock battles wearing heavy armor.  The Squire learned the duties and responsibilities of becoming a knight while serving his Mentor.  He looked after his Master's horses and polished his armor and weapons.  The Squire accompanied his Knight on to the battlefield.  He assisted his Master in putting on his armor, stood by to give aid should his Lord be overmatched and lend his horse should his Knight lose his own.  It was the Squire who raised his Knight if he fell in battle and who bore his body away if he were wounded or killed.

At Esquire Fitness, there is a strong belief and practice of the Knight / Squire relationship, although the battles of today are not fought in the open fields of the English countryside.  When you enlist the services of a "Squire" from Esquire Fitness, you can be assured that he/she will be trained, focused and dedicated to assisting you with your fitness goal and/or overcoming your particular health challenge.
